Hello and welcome to the last TGP Dispatch of 2025! There’s some housekeeping items to address, but we’ll get to that at the end. Right now, we’ve gotta put a firm focus on what’s going on at TGP for our last week of the year.
(we’re closed December 24 – January 1. We will reopen on January 2 with regular business hours)
This week, we’ve got a continuation of Sorcery locals with Gothic packs in the store, it’s a Riftbound locals week as well, and Gundam is continuing as well, it’s an MTG Chaos Draft week, lots of stuff happening. It’s the final week of Commander League X, more on that later, and we’ve got the monthly Mini Paint Night running with a special promotion: buy a drink, get a mini! for free!
That’s a free mini, and all you gotta do is buy a drink! come hang out and paint with us in the lowest-stakes fashion possible, take some big swings, don’t worry about messing it up, it’s gonna be a fun, chill and lovely time! That’s Thursday around six, so we’ll see you there.
Friday Night Magic this week will be a Standard set, whether that’s Final Fantasy of ATLA is TBD, and you’re welcome to make your voice heard on the matter in the TGP Discord if you so choose.
Saturday is the FINALE TOURNAMENT for COMMANDER LEAGUE X, by the way. I’m sure you know all about that. See you there, League Players. Best of luck to all, fight well and with honor. Tournament starts at noon and goes ’till it’s done, there’s gonna be a whole lot of raffle prizes and fun stuff to celebrate the tenth season of League and the year we’ve all made it through together.
Speaking of the end of the year, and things you’ve probably heard about by now:
But, the elevator pitch is: we’re calling it a “Slacker’s Market” because if you haven’t found just the right something for just the right somebody, this might just be the place! We’ve got some specially-curated vendors with tables open in The Gathering Place from noon to six on Sunday, and all comers are welcome to browse wares, grab a drink, and help us send off 2025 in style.
It’s sort of a party, definitely a market, and a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon. We’ll see you there!
Now, the aforementioned housekeeping items. Expect a larger post outlining details, providing reasoning, and more. There’s a big wrap-up coming, at some point. You’ll see it when it does. But, a few important things are changing in 2026 at TGP. Here’s a couple quick hits that, again, you’ll hear more about later. But, for now, if you have any questions or want to talk, please directly contact victor@thegatheringplacegames.com via email or reach out to ludovician_vega (which is also Victor) in the TGP discord via DM.
First, in 2026, TGP will be taking towing in our parking lot far more seriously. No parking on the side wall next to the building, no blocking people in, no parking your car in the lot and walking away. The tow company is currently an on-demand service, something we call when we have an issue. That will never change, we’re not going to allow any towing company to run roughshod in our parking lot. But, with that in mind, we’re going to be a lot more likely to get vehicles out of the lot in the year to come. We’ve seen our parking lot posted elsewhere online as a place to park for free on game days, a lot to leave your car over the weekend, and one of Chapel Hill’s “best places to park downtown without paying for it.” Our lot is for patrons and staff of The Gathering Place and Alpha Pie, and it’s free for the purpose of coming to TGP/AP. A parking page will soon be added to the TGP site to assist folks in understanding our situation, and the larger picture of Chapel Hill’s downtown parking.
Second, in 2026, The Gathering Place will no longer allow outside food from non-local restaurants. No McDonalds, no Raising Cane’s, no chains, none of that. If you buy it local, you’re welcome to eat it here. Everything else stays where you bought it or in your car. We’ll post more about in-store policy and maybe even some of our favorite spots to eat, maybe, on the TGP site sometime soon.
Third, the TGP Discord. It’s a lovely place, and a helpful tool. Changes have already started today, and more are in the pipeline for 2026. We’ll talk more about this later but, for now, know the Discord isn’t going anywhere — but how it functions will be changing specifically to facilitate more in-person interactions and meeting up to actually play games and do fun stuff.
Sorry if this got to sounding a little serious, but, y’know, sometimes things are a little serious even when they’re about a card shop in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
I hope you have an excellent rest of your week, a wonderful holiday, and I sincerely am looking forward to seeing you around even more in 2026.
This week at TGP, we’re drafting FINAL FANTASY for FNM, we’re running big-style events for MTG, Sorcery and Riftbound, and we’re still celebrating the end of the year with fun stuff, sales, and more. Here’s a quick rundown on the big ticket events for the week, taken straight from the TGP Events Page (which is here)
Saturday, 12/13: MTG Vintage Cash Tournament
TGP’s last MTG Cash Tournament of 2025 is Vintage! It’s happening on Saturday, December 13, at noon.
Vintage is Magic’s biggest, baddest most powerful format. Come prove you, and your deck, have what it takes to run the tables across decades of Magic: The Gathering Cards. A $30 buy-in, for cash and glory.
Full proxy friendly! (all proxies must be clearly representative of the intended card and contain all information the official printing does in an easy-to-identify fashion).
Gothic is here, the art is incredible, and the set is BIG! Erik was cooking with this one, it seems, and TGP is ready to put on the first big event for it. Entry is $40 per player, matches continue until one player alone stands undefeated, we really do be contesting that realm, the Cornerstone Kit will be used as prizing, and we’re tossing in a Store Tournament kit as well. Prize packs, playmats, all kinds of stuff on the table! Come play! For glory, for prizes, for fun!
$20 entry, a Riftbound Constructed tournament with prizing distributed in the form of packs and TGP store credit. This League? Yeah, I’m thinking it’s full of Legends.
Other things of note, let’s talk about the rest of this year!
Next week’s Monthly Mini Paint Night on Thursday is officially now our excuse to empty the shelves before we take a little time off. Here’s how that’s going: buy a drink at the bar, you get a mini and you’re welcome to hang out and paint. We’ve got brushes, paints, and you’ll have a mini if you buy one (1) drink. That’s all it takes. We’ll see you there!
Speaking of clearing space on shelves, as far as sales in December go:
This week, we’re going 10% off all accessories, $2 off sleeves, 10% off Pokemon singles
Next week, 10% off MTG singles, $1 off ALL booster packs, $2 off ALL Collector Booster packs
…and then, we’re gone until January!
Throughout the month, if you spend $300 you get a free TGP T-shirt. That can also be leveled up: if you spend $500, you get a free TGP hoodie. This has gotta be in one transaction, no store credit applied.
We’ve been talking about the Slacker’s Market a little bit, hopefully you saw the post over on Instagram. If you didn’t:
Sunday, December 21, The Gathering Place is saying farewell to 2025 and hello to our holiday break with a little party at the bar, accompanied by a market of local vendors who make super cool stuff.
We’re calling it the “Slacker’s Market” as an ode to people who wait until the last minute to get their ducks in a row, their i’s dotted, their t’s crossed, their gifts wrapped and so on and so forth.
Come by from noon to six to see what wares on on offer, have a drink with us, and stay on the nice list.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
The Slacker’s Market is going to rule, we can’t wait for it to happen. Hopefully we see you there, expect another post about it sometime soon.
Obviously, the finale for Commander League X is coming up soon too, but that’s probably a situation where everybody who needs to know, already knows. But you’ll see more stuff about that too, also sometime soon.
Thanks for reading, for playing, for hanging, and we’ll see you around!
This week at The Gathering Place: our monthly CEDH Dual Land Tournament, Week 11 of Commander League (we’re in the home stretch, now!), Old School Thursday, the monthly TGP comedy show, Riftbound on the tables and a good bit more!
As always, you can find the full calendar here, and that includes the weekly rundown as well as the monthly happenings. Speaking of, here’s highlights for December:
(below the events listings, which keen-eyed readers will notice are taken directly from the TGP events page here on the site, you’ll see the rest of this week’s Dispatch post)
DECEMBER
Saturday, 12/6: MTG Commander Dual Land Tournament
The Gathering Place monthly Dual Land tournament series continues! The date for December is 12/6 and the start time is noon. $30 entry per player, prizing based on attendance.
In terms of tournament specifics: 80 minute rounds, 5 points per win, 1 point per draw, 0 points per loss. The tournament will run through TopDeck.
The CEDH Dual Land Tournament is full-proxy friendly, but all proxies must be clearly identifiable across the table. Make sure they look good, are playable, and are completely understandable.
$20 entry for a learn-to-play session to get your feet wet with Riftbound, the League of Legends inspired TCG that’s been all the rage for the past little while! Riftbound is hot! hot! hot! and the gameplay mechanics are extremely cool! Come learn how to play!
Each month, The Gathering Place sets aside a little space at the bar for folks to come hang out, paint minis and do some fun crafty nerd chores. Come hang out with us, reduce the amount of minis in your grey pile of shame, and join in the fun on Thursday, 12/18, we get going around 6 p.m.! Bring your own paints, borrow some from the bar, and if you don’t have any minis of your own but have always wanted to try it out, we’ve got some in stock!
Saturday, 12/20: MTG Commander League X — THE FINALE
Commander League X has been an incredible League season. The pulls, the developments, the pivots and the people who make it all happen. On Saturday, 12/20, Commander League X comes to an end with the final tournament. For all the marbles, it’s all happening. Big plays, big prizes, raffles for everybody who shows up, it’s a party more than anything else. See you there, League players!
Sunday, 12/21: TGP End of Year Party + Holiday Slacker’s Market
As the year draws to a close, The Gathering Place is celebrating another year of good times and great people with a little get-together. We’ll have plenty of drinks on tap and in the fridge, we’re setting up the convention table, and we’ve invited some fantastic folks to come by and run vendors with local crafts, goods and very cool things. Check back here for details and specifics soon!
The Gathering Place and Alpha Pie will be closed 12/24 – 1/1. We’ll reopen on January 2 with normal hours!
Look at how sick these Charmander boxes are, by the way. The post has all the details, I just think they’re cool looking.
Other housekeeping matters, we’re going to make a cute and fun post with people’s pets. If you’d be potentially interested in participating, just perambulate on over to the TGP Discord — the “pets” channel, specifically — and @ Becca (discord name, Bookworm) to get your perfectly precious pet posted on the TGP instagram!
There’s more announcements to be made, but this post is getting to be long enough. In short, next week be on the lookout for more things to be aware of. For now, have an excellent rest of your Tuesday, a great week, and we’ll see you around.
Hello, friends, and welcome to another week at The Gathering Place. As you’ve no doubt heard by now, we’re closed on Thursday, 11/27, but we’re making up for it by electing to participate in some Black Friday sale tomfoolery. There’s also some notable events happening this week: FAB has a big-mode tournament, a Riftbound learn-to-play event, Commander League X is still rolling (and we just opened another box of Mystery Booster 2 literally today)!
Here’s the two big-ticket events for the week, straight from the TGP Events page:
Sunday, 11/30: Riftbound Sunday Early Morning Learn to Play Event (Sealed)
$20 entry for a learn-to-play session to get your feet wet with Riftbound, the League of Legends inspired TCG that’s been all the rage for the past little while! Riftbound is hot! hot! hot! and the gameplay mechanics are extremely cool! Come learn how to play!
Side note, if you’re not in the TGP Discord, maybe you should be! We’re going to be posting the online discount code there FIRST. So join the discord server! It’s also a great place to find games to play with folks, truly a boon to all TGP players.
Hello, all! There’s a whole lot of serious stuff happening out there, so we’ll keep things moving on along at a pace both efficient and respectful of your time.
First things first, it’s worth noting the presence of ICE has been confirmed in the Triangle. Keep your people safe, know your rights, and stay informed. Here’s some helpful links:
As always, the full calendar of TGP events is where it usually is. Be on the lookout over on Alpha Pie’s social media for this week’s veggie slice, it sounds like a banger from what I’ve heard. Also, while we’re here, it might be more efficient to just do this:

Bar. Card shop. Game store. Pizza restaurant. Long ago, the four nations of The Gathering Place lived together, in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Hasbro Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements of our business, could stop them. But, when the world needed them most, they vanished. A hundred years passed, and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar, a Pizzabender named Aang. Though his pizzabending skills are great, he has a lot to learn before he’s ready to save anyone. But I believe…. Aang can save the world.
(As always, you can find all of The Gathering Place’s weekly and monthly happenings over on our calendar)
We do have some BIG news that’s not Avatar-related — the TGP Online Store (and linked in-store kiosk) have been updated with a HUGE amount of new inventory. We’re talking literally over 9,000 cards. There’s a dang Chrome Mox in the online inventory now, we’ve got two Vexing Baubles, there’s a lot of fun stuff, new sets, classics and bangers of all colors and flavors.
This has been a big project, and it’s been in the works for a good while. The efforts to transmute as much of the TGP collection as possible into online inventory free to peruse, browse and buy from has been ongoing and finally going live with this upload is a big step forward! Expect to see more higher-end product on the online store and kiosk as time goes on!
There’s also a One Piece Treasure Cup on Sunday, 11/23! You know what’s after that? Thanksgiving! You know what’s after that? TGP’S BIG-MODE BLACK FRIDAY SALE! Stay tuned for details on those sweet, sweet deals and we’ll see you around!
This week at The Gathering Place: we’re entering Week 8 of Commander League X, Riftbound locals are taking off, FNM is drafting Bloomburrow (!!!) it’s an Old School MTG Thursday week, and we’ve got tournaments aplenty with One Piece Prerelease, the second Commander League X tournament, and Flesh and Blood Pro Quest!
Before we get there, though… have you seen the adoption box? It’s on the bar, and it’s been one of our favorite new additions to the shop. As cards are sorted and processed down in the Distro Dungeon, not all of them fit into what we’re trying to make happen elsewhere. This box has hosted Mothman, weird Pokémon, misprints, whatever we think somebody, somewhere might be interested in. Give it a look sometime, see what’s up for adoption!
Now, to keep breaking down this week’s events, here’s some quick hits taken straight from the TGP Calendar – which, is where it always is, but at this point it’s still worth pointing out you can check it for weekly and monthly events. We’re working through December now, so keep an eye out.
MTG Friday Night Magic
7:00 pm start
$35 entry
This week’s FNM we’re drafting Bloomburrow! Taking it back to the realm of critter, creatures and all sorts of fun interactions, Bloomburrow is a modern classic MTG set and we’re delighted to be able to bring it back to the draft table this week. Also, we appreciate how many folks have interacted with (and paid attention to) our draft announcements — so expect to see more of those as we plan out more fun events on Friday nights!
MTG Legacy Cash Tournament
12:00 p.m.
Spotlighting the Legacy format, this cash-payout MTG tournament has a buy-in of $30 to contribute to the prize pool, allows for 15 proxies in any given deck (proxies must be clearly representative of the intended card and contain all information the official printing does in an easy-to-identify fashion).
New set, new cards, new shenanigans on the TCG high seas! The Gathering Place continues to be one of the top spots around to play One Piece, so we’ll see you out there for the new set this Sunday!
The second tournament, another throwdown, Commander League X continues with another opportunity to test in battle, forge in flames, and claim the glory that rightfully belongs to you and your carefully crafted League deck! You’ve traded, you’ve bargained, you’ve made it happen to get here…. now, show ’em what you’re made of!
The newest TCG on the block, the shiny new card game everybody wants to play with, the League of Legends tabletop adaptation, Riftbound has arrived at TGP! We’re running regular locals every other Sunday with tournaments in the mix, so check the monthly calendar and get ready to rumble Riftbound!
So, that about wraps it up as far as what’s going on around TGP this week goes. Obviously, there’s a lot happening. Thanks for reading, and we’ll see you around!
Happy “End of October” one and all! As spooky season comes to a close and Christmas decorations are already in stores all around town, it’s only fair we have one last week of Halloween at TGP.
Our official Halloweekend Party was last week, it was pretty fun and cool and shoutout to everybody who came out to make it so. Since Franklin Street is well-known for Halloween outings, we’re keeping things relatively relaxed back here on Rosemary. Pizza will be open and slinging this Friday night, we’ll be running a special Halloween Chaos Draft for Friday Night Magic, we’ve got a really cool D&D one-shot lined up, there’s plenty of fun stuff happening. Check out the previous post we made for all the Halloween happenings, if you’re so inclined.
The real big news this week(end) is twofold: as November begins, the monthly CEDH Dual Land tournament kicks off THIS WEEKEND. It’s the first Saturday of each month and boy howdy would you look at the time.
Sunday is looking absolutely, positively STACKED, as well. There’s not one, not two, but THREE events happening. A One Piece TCG prerelease, an MTG Standard RCQ tournament and a Riftbound Modified Champion Deck tournament. Registration links are on respective sites/software(s), and we’ll put them here:
No preorder for Riftbound stock is available, but events can be preregistered for.
Second. Allocation issues continue to be present for just about every card game. Riftbound and Gundam are currently two pretty big offenders for us. We just got in a couple, literally not much at all, Gundam boxes to sell. We’ll be doing them by the pack so folks get a chance to crack them on locals nights. Riftbound will be first-come, first-served. If you’re intent on snagging on, being here when we open on Friday is the play.
Third. Commander Meetups. They’ve been a huge part of what we do week-over-week, and there’s an element in play, a bit of suffering from success in the mix.
we’ve hosted so many players at so many Commander Meetup events at The Gathering Place we’re out of promo cards to give away
We’re going to have to change how Commander Meetup prizing works. What that looks like, how it happens, is TBD. You’ll know when we do. In the meantime. We can guarantee we’ll still be giving out a free pack of Magic cards to all pods. The most important change is this:
All. Literally every single Commander Meetup player. Will be required. REQUIRED. to sign up on the MTG Companion app. This is non-negotiable. This is how Wizards judges how much product and promos we can have. More signups, more better. Simple as. If you need any help with this, or have any questions, talk to a staff member at TGP.
Thanks for hanging, for reading, and being you. See you around, have an excellent rest of your week!
This week at The Gathering Place, we’re getting spookier than usual! This week is our Halloweekend Party, happening on Saturday specifically! We’ve also got the event everybody’s been excited about, the return of the king, JANK is BACK baby! Jank 5: The Huffening is this Sunday! Get your Sharpie hand ready and your brain ready to rumble for some of the biggest, best and wildest prizes Jank has ever seen!
MTG Duskmourn SEALED (with prerelease kits!) at 4pm
Crafts at the bar at 5pm – Paint a lil’ pumpkin wood cutout with your fav bartenders in town!
Spooky-Oke starts at 10pm with your friend and ours, DJ Leo! It’ll be a graveyard smash, guaranteed.
Special Commander pods prizing, Halloween-related, come play and be rewarded!
Of course, Jank Bank 5: The Huffening. We can’t do much more without talking that event over. The prizes are crazy, the games are gonna be crazier, honestly this is about to be some of the most fun possible to have playing MTG at TGP here in NC. Check out all the details in our post here, and remember Jank 5 has a cap of 50 attendees. Space is limited! Register today if you haven’t already!
This week at The Gathering Place, we’ve got a lot happening — especially considering Halloween is just around the corner!
It’s a week for Old School Thursday at TGP, Sorcery, FAB, all the usuals are happening. Friday Night Magic is getting shaken up, Spider-Man no more. Instead, we’ll be drafting Outlaws of Thunder Junction. We’ve also already got drafts planned for the next few FNM sessions: Kamigawa Neon Dynasty, a Halloween Spooktacular, and Bloomburrow! (in that order!) You’ll see a post about that on socials soon but, in the meantime, we did mention Halloween….
You clicked that link, right? Cool. Obviously, that’s a whole lot happening. We’re excited to host all this Halloween-centered action and we look forward to seeing all y’all trickin’ and treatin’ real soon. Truly, spooky season is our time to shine as your local nerd bar haven.
In other news, Commander League X continues with the first big tournament in the rearview. Since we’ve passed that particular milestone, we’d like to extend an invitation to all Commander League players to submit feedback on how things are going so far directly to TGP. Just email us here. Or get in touch over on Discord, send a DM to Victor/Ludovician.
One Piece “Set Sail” Learn to Play Event is set for October 19th at 1pm!
One Piece has proven time and again it’s a hit in the TGP community, and the “Set Sail” event is an opportunity to bring new players into the fold. If you know anyone who’s a little One Piece curious, if you want to reintroduce yourself, or play a brand-new archetype, “Set Sail” might just be the place to do it.
Buy-in is $40, $20 per person. Bring a friend, play One Piece, get free promos and stickers! This is a capped event, so early bird gets the devil fruit!
Warhammer 40k Kill Team Meetup
Starts at 1:00 p.m.
40k Kill Team battles have raged at TGP for quite some time, and our monthly meetup is the place to get together and fight over territory in the grimdark far future.
Monthly, we’re setting specific space aside for 40k games. It’s a casual, fun environment to show off your squad, hone your skills in squad-based combat and battle for glory.
Digimon BT-23 Hacker’s Slumber Prerelease Event
1:00 pm
Did you know that Digimon are digital monsters? Did you know that Digimon are the champions? Change, into digital champions. To, save the, digital, world. Digimon. Digital monsters. Digimon are the champions. ($30 entry per player)
Come play at the prerelease event on October 19th at 1pm to play the new cards before official release!
That just about does it for this week’s announcements! As always, thanks for reading and we’ll see you around. Have a great week!
