Commander League: Summer Session
In the shadow of Commander League Season IX, we’re taking it easy and kicking back this summer. The Summer Commander League is perfect for folks who’ve been looking for a jumping-on point for their first league, or longer-time veterans who just think it’d be neat to not struggle so much for parking on meetup days.
Commander League has steadily evolved into TGP’s signature event, and our limited Commander environment is a fun way to play the game, and build a genuinely good + personal deck while you’re at it.
League entry is $30 + the price of your chosen preconstructed MTG deck. The Gathering Place has a whole lot of precons in stock, so there’s a wide variety of potential options to choose from. That additional $30 gets you Chaos Packs to start, a pack of sleeves, a deck box, and entry into all subsequent prized tournaments + League events. There will be three Summer League tournaments, prizes and raffles at all of them.
The elevator pitch of Commander League is this: each player starts with a precon Commander deck of their choosing. Throughout League play, that deck does not leave TGP. Each week, each player is permitted to open three booster packs of their choice, adding to the collective League card pool. The only cards permitted for League play are the ones pulled in League. Trading is actively encouraged, League is a social experience first and foremost! Over the weeks, players fine tune and improve their decks, culminating in the League tournaments, and the Finale where the League Champion is crowned.

- Commander League: Summer Session Mixer, Saturday, 5/31 @ 6:00
- First Tournament, Sunday, 6/15 @ 12:00
- Second Tournament, Sunday, 7/20 @ 12:00
- FINALE TOURNAMENT, Sunday, 8/24 @ 12:00
This League, we’ll be tracking each player’s tournament performance and using that information to inform standings and seeds. Weekly meetup play will not be affected, but we will encourage frequent crossover through random podding of players. In addition to raffles during each Commander League tournament, TGP will award additional prizes: People’s Champ and Laboratory Maniac – these awards will be decided based on community vote!
- People’s Champ is self-explanatory: who was your favorite player to play against? Who was the coolest, the most pleasant, the most helpful, who’s your best friend, your palm, your home-boy, your rotten soldier., your sweet cheese, your good-time boy? Vote for them!
- Laboratory Maniac is a prize devoted to the most creative / most interesting decks! Cast your ballots for the decks that made you take a second and go “wait, what?”
Also worth noting that, this League, we’re formally kicking off with a social event tied to the COMMANDERJAM event at The Gathering Place on Saturday, 5/31! At 6:00 p.m. that Saturday, following a full day of other MTG-related events, you’re cordially invited to come hang out at TGP and meet your fellow League Players! This evening hangout is not only an opportunity to kick it, it’s also the first time you’ll be permitted to crack your purchased League precon and hit the tables!
