March Madness ’26: Chaos (Commander) League
February 26, 2026
7:08 pm
This March, madness fully takes hold at The Gathering Place as we launch the weirdest, wackiest, wildest Commander League yet: Chaos League!

We’ve talked about League(s) plenty here at TGP, you can click that link if you need clarification, but obviously the usual structure applies. Each player starts with a preconstructed deck, that deck stays at TGP for the duration of League, the only cards eligible to be added are those opened from League-legal booster packs or obtained through TGP-approved events / channels.
The Chaos in this particular league is simple: it’s $80, all-in, to join League. That will get you a random preconstructed MTG Commander Deck from the TGP Vault, sleeves to protect your deck, and three starter pulls from the Chaos League Magic Hole Box to get your League pulls started off strong!
Here’s a sample of some of the decks players have the potential to get when they start their Chaos League journey:

From there, League play continues as always: Commander meetups on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at TGP, played and participated in at your leisure and pleasure. Be advised, though, the League only lasts as long as March Madness does. Here’s the dates:
- Tuesday, 3/3 — League begins! Meetups at TGP every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday during regular Commander pod play.
- Saturday, 3/21 — League Party and pre-tournament, for seeding in the finale
- Saturday, 3/28 — League Finale Tournament
The only MTG booster packs legal for League play are the ones in the Chaos League Magic Hole Box. It’s a full suite of packs taken from the darkest depths of the distro dungeon, a selection of the wide variety of sealed MTG The Gathering Place has to offer. There’s Horizons sets, boosters from across over a decade of Magic — and more, in some cases! Reach in far enough, get lucky enough, and you may find something even older! Or, perhaps, shinier! The only way to know what it’s in the Chaos League Magic Hole Box is to dip in there with your own human hands, and Chaos League players can do so at a low, low price of $8 a pack / pull. Packs aren’t going to run out, pack slots are not restricted this League, do as thou wilt.
If you have any questions about Chaos Commander League, send us an email or pop over in the TGP Discord! Good luck and good hunting to all Chaos League players — you’re going to need it.

This week at The Gathering Place, it’s Turtles all the way down. TMNT is breaking out of the panel, coming off the page, straight out of the TV screen and onto Magic cards and tabletops the world over. We’re no exception, but TGP has a couple plans to make us special. After all, not every local game shop has the good fortune to also run a kickass pizza joint!
Of course, the Gathering Place has prerelease events all weekend long (click here for details and preregistration!)While we’ve got prerelease events happening, every sealed MTG TMNT product — booster boxes, bundles, even the preconstructed Commander deck — will come with a ticket redeemable for a FREE cheese slice down at Alpha Pie!
As if that pizza-related promo wasn’t enough, Alpha Pie is also offering the most limited of limited time deals. For this weekend only — you can order your pizza “TMNT style”
“what does ‘TMNT style’ mean????”
it means a dumb, a stupid, a cartoonish, an irresponsible amount of cheese. we’ve gone past the limits of “A Goofy Movie” and far into uncharted waters. for anyone who wants to take the plunge, going Michelangelo Mode on your Alpha Pie is an experience you can have this weekend only for a measly three additional bucks on your order of a whole pie.
You can expect to hear from us more soon about tournaments, the March event roundup, in-store events, and a whole bunch of other fun and cool things. The March Madness Chaos League specifically is your next big announcement, and folks in the TGP Discord will be the first to hear all the details!
Until then, the TGP events page is still stocked with all the event information you’re looking for (listings are already complete through March!) and the Google Sheets calendar is where it always is.
It’s a pleasure being your local game shop, your neighborhood late-night pizza spot, and a place to play some of the games you love the most.

This week at The Gathering Place: February continues, the Beginner-Friendly Commander League gets cooking good and proper, we talk tournaments and shows this weekend and we prepare for the arrival of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!
As always, make sure you check out the Events Page and the TGP Calendar Sheet for everything happening in the shop now, later, and through the rest of the month / year!
Here’s what’s running this week, outside of the regular weekly locals and recurring events, in rapid-fire:
The prerelease of Riftbound’s Spiritforged set was something a lot more folks were looking for than we were able to take care of, so we’ve got another Spiritforged event happening this Wednesday! Here’s the details we put on Instagram:
Friday’s FNM Draft will be Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty! A perennial favorite, folks tends to be pretty excited when we get a couple new boxes of NEO in from distro. And, wouldn’t you know it, we’ve got a couple this week! See you on Friday, Kamigawa enjoyers!
After a lot of talking about it and a delay due to snow, this weekend is finally time for FINAL FINAL FANTASY. It’s been discussed a bunch, you can still check out the post we made for it with all the details, but the elevator pitch is it’s a $50 Final Fantasy Draft tournament where prizing is pretty out of control. The foil promotional posters Wizards sent the shop, the Chocobo enamel pins from the “Chocobo Racing” event, the Squall promos, the Yuna promos, we’re including them in prizing, we’re raffling them off, we’re celebrating Final Fantasy and Magic and having a great time. You should come by, it’ll be rad.
Saturday is also this month’s scheduled MTG Legacy Cash Tournament, which starts at noon. $20 buy in, entry back in the prize pool, all the usual cash tourney rules apply.
The Lorwyn League finale is this Sunday, good luck to all Lorwyn League participants and we’re going to line up some bonus prizing for y’all. See you there!
Speaking of League, the second week of the Beginner-Friendly Commander League kicks off tonight at Commander Meetup! For anyone who’s hesitant, on the fence, considering joining — honestly, this League is for you! We want to bring new(er) people into the game, help people who played Magic years ago come back to the game, and we want to introduce players to TGP’s favorite semi-limited format, Commander League!
The BFL is a great way to get started with MTG, or to learn more about what you’re trying to get out the game. It’s a place to play with new folks, in a competitive style that’ll introduce you to a wider world. You don’t have to be a “beginner,” necessarily, but the Beginner-Friendly league is an opportunity to expand beyond playing precon decks or borrowing someone else’s deck and learn a lot about the game, deckbuilding and what it’s like to shuffle up and play for real. At the end of BFL, the goal is to go home with a built-out Commander deck that’s uniquely yours, that you know inside-out. A foundation you can be proud of and play in pods from then on. Here’s the page with all the BFL details, we hope you’ll consider joining if this proposal sounds interesting to you!
Which brings us to another Magic: The Gathering line item for the week: the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles prerelease weekend! It’s at the end of the month, which is sooner than it feels, so here’s the page we’ve put together for it! There’s links to preregister, we’ll have all the product Wizards sends us on shelves, and we’ll see you in a couple weeks to see what TMNT looks like on tabletops. ‘Till then, be cool, stay safe, and we’ll see you around!
MTG TMNT at TGP
As much fun as it is to say “MTG TMNT at TGP,” that’s a whole lot of letter and not a lot of additional information or context. But, that said, most folks probably know by now the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are coming to Magic: The Gathering, and The Gathering Place has planned out our prerelease weekend and opened up preregistration online! Here’s the schedule, and each link takes you to preregistration over at the TGP online store:
Friday, February 27
Saturday, February 28
Sunday, March 1
Friday, March 6
- TMNT Draft for Friday Night Magic (not prerelease weekend, but related)
All the usual prerelease rules and expectations apply. Entry is $35 per player, each player will receive a TMNT prerelease kit (six boosters, a foil promo, a spindown die). Each prerelease event is played across three Swiss rounds, two packs per win per player.
TGP will have TMNT product on hand and for sale over the weekend while on-shelf supplies last. Booster boxes, both Collector and Play, the Pizza Bundles, the preconstructed Commander deck, everything Wizards sends to us, we’ll have for you. We’re also very much planning on looping Alpha Pie into this for some kind of TMNT pizza special over the weekend, so keep and eye out for that, too!

MTGPunks Monthly Cash Tournament Series
A long-standing tradition at The Gathering Place has been the monthly MTG cash tourneys. We started with a rotating schedule of Modern, Vintage and Legacy, we added CEDH monthly with a Dual Land in the prize pool every month, and now we’re expanding to even broader horizons with what we’re calling the MTGPunks series!

The “punk” in MTGPunks comes from the fact each of these monthly cash tournaments is a highlight for a beloved community-oriented format. We’ve got Premodern, Old School (specifically, Eternal Central Old School) and Pauper in rotation and we’re ready to rumble in 2026! These are community formats, and proxies are permitted so long as proxies are clearly representative of the intended card and easily identifiable by opponents as the card in question. When it comes to Old School, it’s worth mentioning adherence to Iconic art on cards and proxies alike is required. Here’s the schedule for the year, we’ve already planned it out:
Saturday, Feb. 21 – Premodern
Saturday, Feb. 28 – Old School
Saturday, March 28 – Pauper
Saturday, April 25 -Premodern
Saturday, May 30 – Old School
Saturday, June 27 – Pauper
Saturday, July 25 – Premodern
Saturday, Aug. 21 – Old School
Saturday, Sep. 19 – Pauper
Saturday, Oct. 31 – Premodern
Saturday, Nov. 28 – Old School
Sunday, Dec. 13 – Pauper
Entry is $20 per player, entry goes back in the prize pool, all the regular cash tournament rules apply for the MTGPunks series. Registration links for each will be posted on the TGP website as they come up, so keep an eye out over there. We’ll also take registrations day-of, so we hope to see you out there!
TGP Dispatch: 2/3/26
Hello, friends! It’s time to talk about what’s happening at The Gathering Place! It’s the first week of a new month, so there’s a full boat of announcements to make and happenings to go over. Best we start with what kicked off literally today: the Beginner-Friendly Commander League!
For anyone who’s not acquainted, Commander League has been a staple at TGP for a long time. When the sun set on Commander League Season X, we decided after ten iterations it was worth changing things up a little bit. We began 2026 with a set-specific League squarely focused on MTG’s return to Lorwyn, but we’re opening up our next League this week for anyone who’s been a little on the fence about getting heavy into Magic: The Gathering!
The Beginner-Friendly League is meant to be a fun and hands-on way to take the next step into playing Magic, a soft launch into tournament play and an ongoing exploration into deckbuilding best practices as well as a primer for the Leagues yet to come. Commander League play is a whole different animal, as any League player can tell you, and the Beginner League is a great way to get to know the process as a first-timer without getting throw in the deep end and told to swim.
Each player starts with a precon, just like League. Each player begins with a prerelease kit of their choice, taken from a selection of Lorwyn: Eclipsed, Outlaws of Thunder Junction, Core Set 2019/20, or Spider-Man. From there, it’s a flat $20 a week to receive three packs of MTG boosters, hand-picked literally just for you by TGP staff. The event is limited to 32 participants so we can keep track of everybody and provide guidance on what you’re looking for, who might have trades for you, whatever you need to streamline your League play and understand the landscape. We’re here to help! Also, participation in the TGP discord channel (specifically, the newly-created private Beginner League channel!) might also be a boon when it comes to getting you on the path to glory come tournament time.
For all the details on the Beginner-Friendly Commander League, click here!
There’s a lot of other events happening this week too! Girly Pop Magic is making a triumphant and femme-forward return to TGP for another Thursday night session! GPM comes by TGP every month, so come back the first Thursday and play some fun games with some truly excellent folks! Check out the Girly Pop Magic page(s) for all the details and some truly wonderful posts. If you’ve seen the Prerelease Primers for Lorwyn that were in the shop, that was GPM’s doing! They’re very cool!
This Saturday, TGP is hosting the monthly CEDH Dual Land Tournament, so we’ll see all our competitive Commander player out there on the battlefield come the weekend. Good luck to all, and know registration is still available if you haven’t locked in your slot just yet.
Sunday, 2/8 is looking pretty popping as well. Two prereleases in the form of Gundam GD03 (rescheduled due to snow) and Riftbound: Spiritforged. Both are starting at 1:00 p.m., signups are in person and online at the respective TCG spots, carde.io for Riftbound and Bandai for Gundam.
Next week, the ball keeps rolling up with the [rescheduled] FINAL FINAL FANTASY tournament (which is going to be very cool and fun, not to mention an excellent opportunity to take home a sweet FF promo or the Sephiroth poster right off the TGP wall) and then the Lorwyn League Finale on Sunday!
As the month gets rolling good and proper, keep an eye on the TGP Events pages for changes and updates, be expecting a few more posts about what’s going on, and we’ll see you around!
Beginner-Friendly MTG Commander League
A smaller, curated and more personal experience meant for newer folks in the space and scene. Players will choose their own preconstructed deck to start with, like usual. The main difference is size, personal attention and the week-over-week pack slot mechanics.
BFL will feature a fixed $20/week structure, which comes with curated packs for each player and personal knowledge from staff. To keep things manageable and provide the experience we want, the Beginner Friendly League is capped at 36 players, or, nine full pods of four. Here’s a short form details breakdown:
- League Entry: $30 + cost of a precon (or TGP’s “uncorking” fee if you wish to bring your own deck) Here’s a link to all the preconstructed MTG Commander decks The Gathering Place has in stock!
- Boxes to keep League decks at TGP will be provided, League players can also purchase a 100-count box of Dragon Shield sleeves, at a discount, from TGP. Sleeves for League players are $10, players are welcome to bring their own sleeves if they wish.
- Each player will start with a prerelease kit of their choice, taken from a selection of Lorwyn: Eclipsed, Outlaws of Thunder Junction, Core Set 2019/20, or Spider-Man.
- $20/week for three packs personally curated for you and your deck, and talked with you about by TGP staff
- 36 player cap
- Tuesday, 2/3 — League begins! Meetups at TGP every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday during regular Commander pod play.
- Saturday, 2/21 — League Party and pre-tournament, for seeding in the finale
- Saturday, 3/7 — League Finale Tournament
Sign ups for Beginner-Friendly League are in-store at The Gathering Place
It’s strongly recommended for BFL players to join the TGP Discord! It’s a great place to find games, get a line on potential trades, and the private Beginner League channel offers a direct line for advice on your deck, what packs / cards you’re looking for, and more.
The Beginner-Friendly League will largely follow the rules and structure laid out in the Flagship League document, so here’s a link to that for anyone who’d like to read up on the whole deal. That said, the structure here is pretty simple.
You start with a preconstructed deck, you open some packs. You make some changes, meet some people, play some games. You trade cards, you open more packs, you make more changes. Week over week, your formerly preconstructed deck evolves in the way you’re building it, and you get to know the general goal and play pattern of the deck you’re gradually building over time, as well as the decks of your fellow League players. You make more conscious trades, you keep building. You dig through the League Bulk box to see if there’s something cool in there you need, some treasure previously overlooked. You play in the tournament(s), you have a great time. At the end of League, you’ve got a deck that’s unmistakably your own, built entirely by you, and now well-played and well-loved. “League was pretty cool,” you think to yourself. “Maybe I’ll play in the next one.” and then you ride off into the sunset in a neon purple Lamborghini Countach, sipping a Cherry Coke, listening to synth music and thinking about who your next commander might be.
Or something like that.

This Weekend at TGP (1/31 + 2/1)
The die is cast, and we’ve decided to call it. Predictions for North Carolina’s weekend weather are looking to be well below freezing temperatures, significant precipitation, and potentially several inches of snow. With that in mind, our plans are changing.
Tomorrow, Friday, 1/30, The Gathering Place will be closed in solidarity with individuals and organizations across the United States seeking a fairer, better, brighter future. We invite everyone in our community to spend the day engaged in whatever activities bring them joy and build connection.
For any Lorwyn League players, we’ll be giving you a free pack of ECL the next time we see you. FAB and Legacy players, we’ll see you next week.
But, while it’s a win / win we’re closing on Friday since the weather forecast is looking dire – we’re not exactly trying to leave folks out in the cold literally or figuratively.
The big man himself, Josh Goodsell, will be on-site Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. saucing, slinging and selling whole pies for $10 off and Lorwyn: Eclipsed Draft Night kits straight out the Alpha Pie window! We’re marking them down from the prerelease weekend price point of $140 to a clean $110, with the specific plan in mind being a discount on pizza, a cheaper Draft Night kit, that’s a way to take FNM and TGP and Alpha Pie home with you. Last week’s $5 off a whole pizza Snow Day Special was so successful, we’re running it back and then some.
For folks who might want a take-home draft experience, but don’t necessarily want to play Lorwyn: Eclipsed, we’re going to assemble some homegrown TGP Chaos Draft boxes that are the same deal. We’re assembling them in the Dungeon right now, they’ll have 12 randomly-selected boosters, 90 basics, and a random Collector Booster! We don’t know how many of these we’ll make, so come through early if you really want one.

Since the lion’s share of snow is slated to come down Friday night and Saturday, we’ll be entirely closed 1/31. On behalf of the entire team at The Gathering Place, we’re sorry things are working out this way, but we can’t really control the weather and we want everybody to be safe.
We’re going to reschedule the Premodern Cash Tournament originally slated for this Saturday for Saturday, February 21.
The Gundam TCG GD03 Prerelease originally scheduled for Saturday has been moved to Sunday, February 8.
As always, you can see the full calendar of events for The Gathering Place on the “Events” tab on our website.
Obviously, the Premodern Cash Tournament getting rescheduled isn’t ideal. Since North Carolina’s weather patterns are famously unpredictable and there’s a nonzero chance the NCDOT is really on top of things road-wise and we’re looking at (hopefully) mostly snow instead of ice, we want to put out there: if TGP is open on Sunday, it’s gonna be a Premodern Party. If that ends up being completely confirmed, be on the lookout for details and formal announcements on our site / socials.
Until next time, be safe. We’ll see you around.
